Julian Melodrama Home Page

Our old-fashioned comedy-melodrama is set in the 1890s and is based (loosely, very loosely) on the history of Julian, featuring a fair heroine in distress with the handsome, robust, and (in this case) highly intelligent hero who rescues her from the evil villain.

There are twists and turns as temperance ladies deal with a local saloon owner and a hard-of-hearing granny confuses things for everyone. Between lurking danger and a laugh a minute, you will teeter between the edge of your seat and falling from it right onto the floor. A humorous portrayal of life, mannerisms, and apparel in this classic melodrama.

Smoothing things between acts will be an “olio” (variety show) featuring junior cancan dancers; a variety of local talent acts; and the famous Triangle Club Chorus (a.k.a. Julian Floozies), entertaining with hilarious old-time songs.

The audience is always encouraged to participate by booing the villain, cheering the hero, and crying “awwww” for the sweet heroine. Sometimes the characters need warning or advice -- but keep it clean -- it’s a family show!

Participation in the all-volunteer amateur production requires a huge time commitment, which has been shared for more than half a century by almost every family in Julian. Director Bobbi Green has been involved in the melodrama for 46 or so years, forty of them as director!

The melodrama is presented every weekend throughout October during Julian Apple Days, a great community effort that demonstrates the lively spirit of our town. Proceeds from the melodrama go toward scholarships for Julian graduating seniors and for sponsorship of local youth organizations and activities. Profits are also used to help sponsor local events such as the old-fashioned 4^th of July Parade and a visit from Santa Claus to the Julian Town Hall for the children’s Christmas party.
